Before work/daycare today I stopped by the gas station to quickly fill up. Kaitlyn wasn't thrilled that the car had stopped and turned off, meaning that her episode of My Friends Tigger and Pooh, which was playing on the entertainment system, was shut off. (She doesn't get to watch shows often, so morning trips are special times for her).
I quickly got the gas pump going and jumped back into the car (its freezing), and was met by a whimpering child. I quickly reasoned "Kaitlyn, mommy will turn the car and your show back on, but I have to get gas."
Almost before it was out of my mouth I realized this was no excuse for an 18 month old. I quickly thought - how do I explain?
"Kaitlyn," I said. "Mommy has to feed the car. It's hungry. You like your bottle and your yummy food. (She shook her head yes). It helps you feel good and run. The car needs yummy food too. Mommy has to feed it gas so it will run." The whimpering stopped, she looked at me very thoughtfully and then quietly settled into her seat to wait for the car to finish it's breakfast. I love a child I can reason with!
