A bit more of our vacation: Friday, Saturday, Sunday

So I promised to write about our vacation - not just how we got there - which was funny in itself. So, we arrived late Thursday (you can read my previous blog about that) and here's how the rest of the trip went!

Friday: We lazed around as much as you can with a 15 month old who is ready to run, and spent the day driving around Miami and Miami beach. We drove the strip, stopped at the beach, enjoyed the palm trees and finally parked in order to get a bite to eat at a Mexican place that Nathaniel and I had enjoyed when we were in Miami two years ago. After a yummy stop we walked through the shopping area of Miami, which is basically a strip through the center of the island with restaurants and shops. Nathaniel found me some really cute pants and we bought an adorable penguin puppet, which really has nothing to do with Miami. Go figure. Friday evening we just relaxed in our hotel suite and enjoyed watching Kaitlyn, talked and went to bed early :)

Saturday: The adventurous souls that we are decided to drive all the way through the Everglades. We stopped at the visitors center where Kaitlyn got to pet an Alligator. Okay, not really, but in their display they had a fake one popping out that Kaitlyn enjoyed touching. Then we basically spent the day driving, stopping at an outlook here and there. It was actually a really restful and relaxing way to spend the day. We got all the way down to the end where you could look out and see the Florida Keys, but only one of us dared to venture out of then van. You see the sign said HIGH for mosquitoes and the farther we went, the thicker they got. Sandy really had to use the bathroom though and there was a facility out there - she got out, ran, found it was closed and ran back with a swarm behind her. Okay, so maybe not a swarm, but it was kind of funny to watch her run while swatting and hitting herself :P We finally decided it was time to turn around and head home. We got back to the hotel, returned the rental car, ordered some yummy pizza, and went to bed. The next day we would be heading for the cruise :)

Sunday: Sunday we packed up the room, checked and rechecked and still left Kaitlyn's cow phone behind :( Then we hopped in the shuttle bus and excitedly headed for Port Miami and the Royal Caribbean ship - Freedom of the Seas. Checking in to the ship was a breeze and then we walked around until our cabins were ready. We first took advantage of the "FREE" all you can eat buffet, then explored the ship. Royal Caribbean ships are basically giant hotels with a mall in the middle. They are amazing! The only bad thing is that Nathaniel's ankle was still badly swollen and sore from our little running accident a week or so before so he spend every moment hobbling and drugged up on ibuprofen :( Probably the highlight of the day was the safety drill. We all had to put on our life jackets and learn about how we jump overboard - I mean exit the ship into lifeboats in an orderly fashion - in the case of an emergency. The real highlight though was when we tried Kaitlyn's on her. With sleeves, a hat and a system that locks her into the jacket it was quite a site to see. She thought it was hilarious and kept looking in the mirror laughing and laughing. We have lots of pictures to prove it!

More to come....
